In this presentation we look at how programmes have been implemented in order to address the growing burden of visual impairment and introduce VISION 2020: The Right to Sight, the global initiative to end avoidable blindness. This projection was based on service levels available at the time and the anticipated population growth and ageing across the world. In the mid 1990s it was projected that the magnitude of global blindness would double, from 38 million in 1990 to 76 million by 2020.
